Shore fishing

Martha's Vineyard boasts accessible and productive shore fishing. We have car passes that enable us to drive on the beach to access remote and beautiful areas. In one half-day trip from shore, an angler can easily fish rips, flats, inlets, and channels. We specialize in sight-casting. However, there are many productive ways to catch fish if conditions do not permit flats fishing.

capt. AbBie Schuster

Fly fishing is something I have done my entire life which is why the word Kismet spoke to me when naming this business. Owning and running an outfitter is my destiny. My passion and where my knowledge lies is fly fishing. I have always been in the fly fishing industry. I was born and raised in New England and grew up fishing these waters, which provided me the opportunity to gain knowledge and passion for this sport. I learned to fish on Martha's Vineyard when I was young and also spent many years fishing the rivers and small creeks of Maine, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. I attended the University of Montana, which only fueled my fly fishing addiction, so it was a natural choice for me to become a fly fishing guide. In 2011 after completing Sweetwater Guide School, I started guiding in Montana and have not looked back. I have guided in Washington and Alaska and have fished waters abroad. To me, there is nothing better than giving the gift of fly fishing to a client. Every trip will be an opportunity to not only catch fish but expand and grow your knowledge. My goal is to have every client leave with lifelong memories, a stronger passion for fly fishing and conservation, and a greater understanding of this sport. I am a certified USCG Captain and Maine guide. Other certifications included CPR, first aid, and swift water rescue.

Capt. Lars Schuster

Lars learned to fly fish at a very young age, many of Lars’ first memories include fly fishing small ponds in Connecticut, hunting wild brook trout in New Hampshire, or casting for striped bass off Lighthouse Beach in Edgartown. Growing up fishing on Martha’s Vineyard, Lars has developed a strong passion for the Vineyard fishery and loves sharing his passion with clients. As an adult, Lars' excitement for fly fishing has taken him to flats in Belize, Mexico, and the Bahamas. Since graduating from Bates College in 2020, Lars has been guiding and managing Kismet every summer. When Lars is not on Martha’s Vineyard he lives in Bozeman, Montana where he enjoys skiing, snowmobiling, and trout fishing. One of Lars's highlights guiding has been learning more about targeting striped bass on the flats. While he loves fishing the rips and poling flats via boat, Lars’ favorite activity is wading flats for striped bass. When Lars is not fishing he can be found hanging out with his family, surfing, spearfishing tautog, or flying at Katama Airport. One of Lars’ goals for the season is to explore targeting bluefin tuna and mako shark on the fly. Lars feels passionate about striped bass conservation and enjoys educating anglers on the importance of treating these fish with respect. Whether you are a seasoned angler targeting a trophy fish, or someone looking to learn to fly fish, a day on the water with Lars will be a memorable experience.

Capt. Justin Painter

Captain Justin Painter has a USCG 100 ton license. He has worked on boats his whole life. Growing up on Lake George, New York he was on the water at a very young age. In college, he studied on the SEA Semester boat out of Woods Hole. Justin has been a captain on Martha's Vineyard since 2012 and that is when his passion for fly fishing was sparked. Guiding was a very natural transition for him because he understands the currents, tides, and weather so well from years of experience on boats. Justin is a patient and very knowledgeable guide who will put you on fish. He loves getting the boat where it needs to be for the client to get the best shot at big fish. Justin runs both our Parker and Beavertail and is excellent at poling through the expansive flats Martha's Vineyard offers. He also loves holding the boat in the rips and watching clients cast into the waves. Justin's passion lies on the water and it is where he feels most at home. Justin is a year-round resident of Martha's Vineyard and when he is not guiding you will find him at Martha's Vineyard Hospital as a RN. His other passions include rock climbing, skiing, traveling, and hanging out with his new daughter, Isla!

Capt. Natty Schneider

Captain Natty Schneider was raised on Martha’s Vineyard. A 4th generation Islander, his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins, and friends, played an integral and long-lasting role in cultivating his passion for the island, fishing, and all kinds of water sports. Come winter, you’ll find him in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, fishing for trout and leading back country ski adventures. His passion for the outdoors was evident early on, as he spent countless winter afternoons surfing the Vineyard’s south shore and spring and summer days snorkeling its North Shore with speargun in hand, hunting tautog, black sea bass, and flounder. Natty learned to fly fish from his grandfather Kib Bramhall, a legendary island angler and derby hall of famer. Since catching his first striper, Natty developed a passion for fly fishing that many would classify as an obsession. Captain Natty runs an 18-foot Maverick skiff, specializes in sight casting for stripers in Vineyard Sound and the waters around the Elizabeth Islands, and chasing down false albacore and bonito in the late summer and fall. Early mornings and long days on the water are the name of the game when fishing with Natty.

Schools

A one or two-day school is a great way to get fully immersed in the art of fly fishing. They are ideal for getting involved in fly fishing, brushing off bad habits, or learn a new fishery. After leaving our school, you can hit the water confidently with new tools and techniques. In our schools, you will learn the art of the fly cast, knot tying, reading the water, what fish eat and when, fish fighting and landing, wading technique, safety, conservation, and so much more. You will leave the day with your own book to refer back to.

Schools will be taught classroom style in the morning and out on the water in the afternoon. A two-day school provides the angler with more time to be immersed in the sport. Both fresh and saltwater curricula can be covered in a two-day school. There is a 4-person maximum to ensure quality learning and hands-on experience. Special arrangements can be made for larger groups. You will leave the day with the knowledge and confidence to fly fish on your own. All equipment is included.

Abbie and Lars are just the best! I caught my first saltwater striper on the fly because of their commitment to excellence. The B&B above the fly shop is super and extremely convenient to the shop and restaurant scene in Edgartown. I highly recommend Abbie and her team for your next adventure!
